XC Week of August 15th

XC Week of August 15th

Hello XC Families!!

We are off to a great start of the season. It might feel hard for your kids right now as they are just getting back into shape, but pretty soon they will be cruising on the trails and having a great time!

The early part of this week is going to be HOT!!! Please make sure your athletes drink TONS of water throughout the day so they stay plenty hydrated for practice. We have chosen locations this week that hopefully will provide at least some shade on the trails. But you many also want to bring cold towels, spray bottles and extra water to carry on the trails to keep the kids from over heating.

As always, the locations will also be posted on Facebook and on our website Unitedtrack.org. I have also begun to add the practice schedule on the “Calendar” on the website, and the meets will be up there soon too. (Please note that calendar is subject to change so please be sure to check it often in case a location changes based on heat or other conflict…)

MONDAY: OAK CANYON PARK 5:30-7 p.m.
(please park at the far parking lot and gather by the concrete stage)

TUESDAY: LANG RANCH 5:30-7 p.m

THURSDAY: AHMANSON 5:30-7 p.m (*no bathroom)

SATURDAY: OLD AGOURA PARK 9-10:30 a.m.

Also, if anyone still owes me any paperwork, birth certificates, or money for registration, PLEASE bring that to practice this week as I am hoping to have the roster totally finalized by the end of the week. … Read All

PARENT CORNER: HOW DOES CROSS COUNTRY WORK?

PARENT CORNER: HOW DOES CROSS COUNTRY WORK?

PARENT CORNER: HOW DOES CROSS COUNTRY WORK??

Since we have so many new families to the sport of Cross Country, we wanted to take a few minutes to explain how it works.

Our club, United Track and Cross Country, is part of a larger conference called Southern California Youth Track and Field Conference (http://scytfc.org/). There are 8 club teams in this conference. We race against the other 7 teams throughout the season.

Throughout the season, all athletes from all 8 teams are “Ranked” according to their finishes in each meet–done by age group and gender. So if your child finishes top 5 in his first few meets, he will be “ranked” top 5 in the conference. As the weeks go on, the rankings change based on each week’s finishes…

In our club, we always put a strong emphasis on PRs. This stands for Personal Record. We encourage personal improvement each week rather than winning or rankings. If your child finishes 25th the first week and finishes 20th the second week, that’s a great PR! If your child finishes her first 3K run in 20 minutes, and then finishes her second one in 17 minutes, that’s a great PR!

However, there are some athletes on our team who are very competitive in our conference and will indeed be ranked TOP 8. All athletes ranked in their age group in the TOP 8 are invited to compete in post season competition. Post season this year will lead up to the AAU National Junior Olympics in December. We will talk more about this as the season goes on. But just know that if your child has a desire to compete in post season, he or she must compete in a minimum of 4 conference meets over the season and be ranked Top 8.

There are also two “Invitational Meets” (Free Spirit at Mt. Sac and The Comets Invitational). These meets include other conferences as well as our own conference (SCYTFC). For these two meets, ALL athletes are welcome and DO NOT need to invited. The “Invitational” title just means we have invited other conferences to compete with ours… At both of these meets, United’s TOP 5 ranked athletes from each age group and gender will be racing as The Comets and it will be a scored meet. Again, I will be able to explain more about this as the time gets closer, I don’t want to confuse with you with too many details, but for those parents reading this who have ranked athletes, please note this NEW CHANGE this year, we will be running as the Comets at these two meets…

The schedule for the meets will be posted very soon, and I will alert you when it is posted. The first one is Sept 10th. Meets usually start at 8 a.m. and are run in order from youngest to oldest by age group, girls first then boys. So the order would go Gremlin Girls, Gremlin Boys, Bantam Girls, Bantam Boys, Midget Girls, Midget Boys, Youth Girls, Youth Boys. … Read All
